Dear friends of Daily Philosophy,
we all must make a living in some way or other, and your host here at Daily Philosophy is no exception. As you perhaps know, I am currently employed as an assistant professor in philosophy, but this is a temporary post that will end in two years’ time and the future for me and my family is uncertain. And so is, therefore, the future of Daily Philosophy.
By buying a premium subscription (currently at the price of two Starbucks coffees per month), you can help me bring Daily Philosophy on the path to a sustainable future and be part of the effort to provide our crazy world with a little more calm and thoughtfulness for everyone.
Like many philosophers, I am a rotten businessman, but I’ve tried my best to make these subscriptions worth your money, while at the same time keeping a lot of good content free for those who don’t feel like supporting Daily Philosophy financially.
So here is how this will (initially) work. We can always change things down the road. Please send me your opinions and comments and we’ll try to do this in a way that makes everyone happy, while at the same time also giving me a way to support myself and my family.
You can subscribe here: https://dailyphilosophy.substack.com/subscribe
As a subscriber, you will get exclusive content that is not available elsewhere and you will also receive all the ebooks we publish for free (for 2022, this will be at least 6 books, for a total value of around 30 USD if you buy them on Amazon).
You will also receive a monthly PDF or ebook file with the month’s posts for easy printing and offline reading, so you can take a month of posts to the beach, a coffee shop, or your off-grid hermit hut of choice and read them comfortably without having to squint at a phone screen. This is the one feedback I got from multiple readers: that it is sometimes impossible for them to read all the articles in time. Now you can just wait until the end of the month and get the whole bunch in a magazine format that you can read electronically or print out on your own printer.
If you really like Daily Philosophy but can’t afford the monthly (or yearly) contribution, please send me a message and tell me about your situation. I will be happy to give free subscriptions to readers who need them. You can also gift a subscription to someone else and brighten their life by giving them access to weekly but timeless philosophical wisdom.
I can also give you a trial subscription for a month if you’d like to try it out. Again, just send me a message.
Over the course of the year 2022, we will examine a number of special topics, some chosen by you over the past year, and some I like to write about:
- Non-human cognition
- Ethics of nature and global warming
- The future of mankind
- World philosophies
Some may sound a bit abstract now, but they will all be understandable and relevant to everyday life as is always the case with Daily Philosophy articles.
These articles will be mostly in the paid area and then appear as books, available through online bookstores. By getting a premium membership, you will be able to access every single article and receive all these books for free. The paid articles will not be available for free anywhere, including the Daily Philosophy website.
I will also go on publishing the usual free, weekly articles and interviews on various philosophy topics, and the occasional article from the list above. Older posts will be archived and the archive will stay available to paying subscribers, so that might be another reason to consider a subscription. (Although everyone can create their own archive by keeping the emails in their mailbox). I’m trying hard to provide value to paid subscribers without taking too much away from those who can not pay or don’t (yet) want to pay.
I have not yet decided on what rhythm would be best for the paid vs free versions of the newsletter. Should both go out on Fridays? Or one midweek and the other on the weekend? Or should there be only one newsletter per week (e.g. on Fridays) and have this oscillate between free and paid content? If you have an opinion, please do write me below or by replying to this email! I’m grateful for every opinion!
PAID SUBSCRIPTIONS WILL START NEXT FRIDAY, January 7, 2022 with the first batch of exclusive content. But you can already subscribe, if you like.
If you’d like to stay on the free plan, you don’t need to do anything. To change your plan and support Daily Philosophy, please click here:

To make the offer even more tempting, I’m offering you the paid subscription for half the price until January 15th. Click here to get the monthly subscription for only USD 3.50, which is, frankly, a steal:

It’s the price of one coffee per month and with this you help support me, Daily Philosophy, and our common cause to bring more thoughtfulness and knowledge to our world.

Many thanks for your support and have a great new year 2022!
